An earthquake struck in the indian ocean measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale late monday night. the most devasted area would have to be the island of Nias, west of Sumatra, where 80% of multi-storey buildings have been reduced to rubble, not mentioning trapping numerous helpless people inside. An estimated of 2000 people have been killed in this freak incident of nature.
The recent tsunami that ravished the region just before the turn of the new year, also devastated Nias, although not much media coverage was focused there, wiping out a vast number of their population.
Why is nature dealing such cruel fate towards this small island? or in a larger perspective, why is nature doing damage again in this region? hasn't it removed enough loved ones, family members and friends that people hold dear to their hearts? are the 200,000 lives that nature claimed just over 3 months ago, not enough to satisfy its hunger for destruction and pain? I wouldn't know.
or is the indian ocean a laboratory for something / someone who conducts these 'experiments' over and over again?
Despite the tremendous advance of knowledge in science and technology, there is a long way to go in understanding nature, predicting it, less controlling it. The world is not our laboratory, it belongs to nature.
Nature, we may know it. But we will never understand it.
Or is there a God? if so, is this God kind and generous? or exceptionally difficult, unleashing such disasters onto mankind? I wouldn't know.
Whatever it is, I beckon everyone to take a moment of silence, to respect and mourn those who have died, and more depressingly, those who have lost loved ones, once again.
I pray with a heavy heart and hope that the survivors have enough faith in whichever God / religion to get them through this repeated calamity.
Because quite certainly, that is the survivors only worldly possession left for them to cling onto.
